Moong Dal Masala Khichdi

Moong Dal masala khichdi is a simple and spicy healthy rice and lentil (green gram or moong bean) based dish ideally served for lunch and dinner. Typical khichdi recipe is without, unseasoned, mild-tasting bland in taste and typically served to kids and for adults with indigestion problems.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp ghee / clarified butter

  • 1 bay leaf / tej patta

  • 2 pods cardamom / elachi

  • 1-inch cinnamon / dalchini

  • 3 clove / lavang

  • 1 tsp cumin / jeera

  • pinch of hing / asafoetida

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 1 slit green chilli

  • 2 tbsp peas / matar

  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste

  • 1 to mato, finely chopped

  • ¼ carrot, chopped

  • 2 tbsp capsicum, chopped

  • ¼ tsp turmeric / haldi

  • ½ tsp kashmiri red chilli powder / lal mirch powder

  • 2 tbsp coriander leaves, finely chopped

  • ½ tsp garam masala

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ cup rice, washed

  • ½ cup moong dal, washed

  • 3¼ cup water

Directions

  • Firstly, in a pressure cooker heat 1 tbsp ghee and saute 1 bay leaf, 2 pods cardamom, 1-inch cinnamon, 3 cloves, 1 tsp cumin and a pinch of hing.
  • Continue to saute 1 onion followed by 1 slit green chilli and 1 tsp ginger garlic paste.
  • Also, saute 1 tomato till they turn soft and mushy.
  • Add vegetables like 2 tbsp peas, ¼ carrot and 2 tbsp capsicum. Saute for a minute.
  • Now add ¼ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp chilli powder, ½ tsp garam masala and 1 tsp salt. Saute on low flame.
  • Furthermore, add ½ cup rice and ½ cup moong dal. Saute for a minute on low flame.
  • Now pour 3¼ cup water and 2 tbsp coriander leaves. Mix well.
  • Cover and pressure cook for 5 whistles on medium flame.
  • Finally, serve masala khichdi with curd and pickle.

tips

  • Firstly, adding vegetables is completely optional.
    Also, adjust the amount of spices if you are serving to kids.
    Additionally, add water depending on the consistency you are looking for.
    Finally, masala khichdi recipe tastes great when served hot.
